Philosophy of Dance My philosophy of dance has been significantly shaped and altered by my varied experiences as a student, performer and an instructor. Without question, my views have developed, expanded, and evolved over the years as a direct result of education, careful observation, active participation, and thoughtful reflection. Consequently, I have come to believe that an effective, knowledgeable instructor not only creates a stimulating class environment conducive to learning, but also establishes and maintains positive working relationships with students, parents, peers and members of the community. Furthermore, she must constantly pursue and demonstrate knowledge of new ideas, current teaching practices and changes in the field of dance to implement in the studio. This is accomplished in many ways including on-going training, interaction, and observation. In short, an effective instructor must be flexible, open-minded, and resourceful when considering the varied needs of students. I firmly believe that my role as an instructor is to guide students and facilitate their learning through a variety of experiences and opportunities designed to encourage active, meaningful student involvement in the learning process. Likewise, I assert that studios should reflect inclusive practices that address the intellectual, cultural, and social diversity of learners. I create many opportunities for student growth and success. I take the time to reflect daily on my lessons, noting what worked well for each student. I also note what needed to be modified or accommodations put into place so that dance is accessible and worthwhile for all. Moreover, I strive to create a safe, positive learning environment that embraces diversity, respects individual differences in people, and asserts that all children are capable of learning dance. |
